“Carl is a photographer from Leigh whose work explores subjects from portraiture to landscape. Using homemade infrared technology and a low-budget caffenol process, Skull is revealing the world around him in a new light. His images invite us to notice what transposes this hidden world into one more familiar with long-lasting beauty.”
Aaron Pearce (collaborator).
I have two infrared cameras, the first one I converted to infrared with a permanent filter of 600nm, and the second was a camera I had had for ages that was broken so I pulled it apart, fixed it and converted it to full-spectrum so with filters I have more control of what light gets into the photos.
Caffenol is a process for home developing film with coffee I found online, I looked up how other people do this and formulated a way that works for most if not all film I have tried and used; a lot of that being colour, that comes out black and white.
Music is another passion of mine and it's nice to get photographs of bands giving it their all, whether it's friends that I can get on stage with and get stuck in or sneaking a potentially sacrificial old Russian camera past security to get some shots as I did with the above photo of Chris Ballew.
I like faces, I like playing with light and I like capturing moments.
Some of these are digital and some are 35mm colour lab-processed.
